Streaming Videos

Did you know that we have several thousand streaming videos accessible directly from our library catalog?  Many of these titles come from the Films on Demand service.  We have a subscription to the Master Academic collection, giving us access to over 8,000 full-length video programs and 74,000 video segments. Collections cover the humanities & social sciences, business & economics, science & mathematics, and health & medicine. Producers of films include: Films for the Humanities & Sciences, NBC, CNBC, ABC, PBS, BBC, National Geographic, and many more.

Today, they announced the release of around 50 more selections from California Newsreel films, the oldest non-profit, social issue documentary film center in the United States.

Ebrary "Academic Complete" Ebook Collection
Ebrary has over 70,000 titles.  They are loaded in our library catalog (or you can search directly at ebrary).  Once you find a title, you can view it on screen, or you can download it to your computer or other device (Paul Bartels and I just put one on his Ipad, and it looked great--hint, hint).  Right now, the default download period for ebrary is 14 days.  Please give it a try, and let us know if you have any trouble.

National Geographic Magazine Archive
Includes every page and every photograph, all fully searchable through an intuitive interface, from 1888-1994.  'Nuff said.

Readers' Guide Retrospective: 1890-1982
Maybe you remember the bound volumes of this one from high school?  It was the go-to general-purpose source, before Google and Ebsco (Ebsco bought the original company, btw).  The online version offers full coverage of the original paper volumes, providing indexing of over three million articles from more than 550 leading magazines.

Humanities Index Retrospective: 1907-1984
Another classic resource from the Wilson company.  Provides indexing for important humanities-related content--including nearly 800 periodicals, over 1,000,000 articles, and citations for over 155,000 book reviews. New Resources for April

This month, we are pleased to feature Drifting into Darien: A Personal and Natural History of the Altamaha River, written by former Commencement speaker, Janisse Ray, and published by the University of Georgia Press in 2011.  The book is more than an account of paddling its entire length to where it empties into the sea.  "The Altamaha River is wide and made of molasses," writes Ray in the Preface, "It is a root doctor.... holy scripture, on which is written a creed to live by."  Come in and check it out.

New Resources Related to Archival Materials & Digital Docs

We've linked to two new resources from NC Live: ArchiveGrid and OAIster.

ArchiveGrid is an important destination for searching through historical documents, personal papers, and family histories held in archives around the world. Thousands of libraries, museums, and archives have contributed nearly a million collection descriptions to ArchiveGrid. Researchers can discover the items in each of these collections, then contact the archives to learn how to access the materials. Provides access to primary source information, including birth and death records, ship logs, cemetery records, and more.

OAIster is a union catalog of digital resources from archive collections around the world. It represents multidisciplinary resources from more than 1,100 contributors worldwide. Records contain a digital object link allowing users access to the object. Includes items such as theses, technical reports, research papers, government documents, and images.

E-Audio Books Now Available

E-audio books have returned, this time on the Recorded Books platform.  There are also links to the site on the library home page, under "Articles & Databases."  The first time you use the service, you will need to create your personal account.  Books can be listened to on your computer, or you can transfer them to most mp3 players.  Mac users will need to download Media Manager (there is a link on the site for getting that software).

There is good support in the "help" section, and we are happy to assist you as well.  Enjoy!

New Resources for February

We are pleased to announce the addition of Siti Kusujiarti's new book, Power, Change, and Gender Relations in Rural Java: A Tale of Two Villages. Co-authored with Ann Tickamyer, published by Ohio University Press (2012), and based on research during three important historical and political periods in Indonesia, the book examines the contradictory status of women.  In some ways, women have high status and broad access to resources, but other situations suggest that Javanese women lack real power and autonomy. Javanese women have major responsibilities in supporting their families and controlling household finances. They may also own and manage their own property. Yet their independence and influence are determined by a culturally prescribed, state-reinforced, patriarchal gender ideology that limits women’s autonomy. Power, Change, and Gender Relations in Rural Java examines this contradiction as well as sources of stability and change in contemporary Javanese gender relations.

Our database feature this month is Art & Architecture Complete, which provides full-text coverage of 380 periodicals and more than 220 books. In addition, this database offers cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 780 academic journals, magazines and trade publications, as well as over 230 books. It includes an image collection of over 63,000 images. Last month we featured the Legal Information Reference Center.

For February, we would like to highlight Social Responsibility and Sustainability: Multidisciplinary Perspectives through Service Learning (378.103 S678). Part of the Service Learning for Civic Engagement series, this book contains 11 chapters divided into three sections: environmental awareness, increasing civic engagement, and sustainability concepts in business and economics. It includes an activity/methodology table and a sample syllabus. Read the publisher's description.


Our electronic resource of the month is Legal Information Reference Center. With full text for many of the top consumer legal reference books, this database contains over 310 full-text publications and thousands of legal forms. Many of the books are provided through Nolo, the nation's oldest and most-respected provider of legal information for consumers and small businesses. This database offers the everyday user the necessary tools and detailed "how-to" instructions to address a range of legal issues including business law, financial planning, family law, property and real estate, and rights and disputes.
